Today we went to search for a box hidden on a beautiful hiking trail in a
state park near our town. We found the trail and started the hike. We hiked
and hiked and hiked. We never saw the signpost marking a landmark where the
detailed clues start. Eventually we turned around because it was obvious we'd
gone too far. On the way back we carefully watched the sides of the path for
the sign, but didn't see one. Then we were back close to where we had started.
We stopped a woman we saw on the trail and asked her if she knew where the
sign was, and she told us she went on that trail all the time and she thought
they had removed the sign because too many people were going to it from tour
buses (?). So we stopped and ate our lunch while we decided what to do. Of
course we decided to hike around some more looking for it. We turned back
around and were trying to find either a place that looked like a sign had been
removed, or a sharp switchback since that was the next clue after finding the
sign. As we carefully looked at everything we passed, we eventually caught a
glimpse of metal under a fallen tree. It turned out several trees had fallen
and crushed the sign. It was almost completely covered by trees and leaves; we
wouldn't have seen it if we hadn't been looking at everthing so closely. Once
we realized that was the sign, we followed the rest of the clues and found the
box in great condition! It was very rewarding to find since it was such a
challenge for us!!

Yup, I let him know, and he's already added a note to the clues (that was fast!)

Wow! I love letterboxing adventures like this! That sure beats going
home early and emailing the placer for clues.
